New Delhi:
The German citizen who was stranded in the transit area of Delhi airport for the past 55 days due to the closure, left for Amsterdam on Tuesday.
According to sources, the German citizen left on an early morning KLM flight to Amsterdam after testing negative for COVID-19 before boarding.
German citizen Edgard Ziebat had been living in the international transit area at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in Delhi for almost 54 days after he got stuck due to coronavirus-induced blockage.
The authorities concerned had made the appropriate arrangements for the foreign citizen living at the airport and had also launched an investigation against him.
During the interrogation, Ziebat had said that he came from Vietnam on March 18 on a Vietjet airline and that he had a connecting flight to Istanbul in Turkey.
But there were no flights available to Istanbul since India had suspended all commercial flight services due to COVID-19, he told authorities.
Later, airport authorities also asked the 40-year-old German citizen to board a special flight to Germany, which operated under the German Embassy in Delhi, but neither the embassy nor the airlines agreed to take him on board. Turkish Airline also refused to take it on board because it did not carry a Turkish passport.
The DIAL airport operator had provided all the basic amenities, including food, clothing, toiletries, and a recliner to sleep the German citizen.
