Last update: The latest date to register for the Engineering Graduate Aptitude Test or GATE 2021 was extended to October 7, 2020 by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. IIT Bombay would conduct the Graduate Entrance Exam in February 2021. According to the posted notice, ‘The regular fee application will be accepted until Wednesday, October 7, 2020. This extension of the last registration date for GATE 2021 is performed based on various requests received from potential candidates. ‘ See the full notice here.

GATE is mandatory for admission to master’s programs and direct doctoral programs in Engineering / Technology / Architecture and doctoral programs in relevant branches of Arts and Sciences, in institutions supported by the Ministry of Education and other government agencies, including those Institutes of Technology of India. The exam is also used for recruitment in various public sector companies (UPM). Therefore, interested candidates are encouraged to register at GATE online application processing system or GOAPS portal as soon.

IIT Bombay, the management institute, has made significant changes to the GATE 2021 exam. These are listed below for quick reference.

GATE 2021: Important Changes Made

  1. GATE 2021 would be a completely computer-based test in which all exams would be objective. The pattern of the question paper would vary from topic to topic, but would essentially include some multiple-choice questions, some multiple-choice questions, and some number-response type questions.
  2. This year, two new themes have been introduced to expand the reach of GATE. Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ES) and Humanities and Social Sciences (XH) have been introduced in Economics, English, Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology, making 27 as the total number of subjects available for examination.
  3. The syllabus of all jobs has been revised. Students are advised to stop by the GATE 2021 Brochure carefully
  4. The eligibility criteria have also been relaxed. Students in the third year of their bachelor’s programs are also eligible to sit the exam.

Students may note that due to the COVID19 situation, the dates may be modified or changed. Furthermore, the institute may decide to cancel the examination centers outside India, based on its assessment of the situation at the end of November 2020.
