Many have died, several hospitalized after a gas leak incident in Visakhapatnam. The leak occurred at the LG polymer plant around 2.30 a.m. May 7.

More than 100 have been hospitalized after complaints of shortness of breath and vomiting. According to reports, there was a leak of styrene gas from the plant.

Styrene is a poisonous and flammable gas used in the plastic engineering industry.

Police arrived at the scene around 3 a.m. and alerted residents with speakers and sirens. Water blowers are being used to lessen the effect of gas leakage.

People have been advised to cover their faces with a damp cloth as a precaution. Those living within a 5 km radius have been affected by the gas leak.

A team from the National Disaster Response Force arrived at the scene to evacuate people. More than 5,000 people have been evacuated to safer places. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called a meeting of the National Disaster Management Authority in the wake of the situation.
