Fresh air at last! Spanish children allowed to go out for the first time in six weeks

MADRID: On foot, on skateboards and on skateboards, Spanish children left their homes on Sunday for the first time after six long weeks of living under one of the strictest coronavirus blockades in Europe.
The relaxation came when Spain, one of the worst affected by the worldwide epidemic of COVID-19, recorded its lowest daily increase in the number of deaths from coronavirus in more than a month.
The children wearing protective masks were in Madrid, with children under 14 allowed outside for the first time since the government declared a state of emergency on March 14 and closed most activities.
Lucía Ibáñez, 9, went for a walk with her mother and said that she had missed the streets and the park and that she “felt the air on her face” during the confinement.
“I never thought I would miss school, but I really miss her,” he said.
Children will be allowed one hour of supervised outdoor activity per day between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., staying within one kilometer of your home.
Adults can accompany up to three children, who will not be allowed to use playgrounds and must adhere to social distancing guidelines, staying at least two meters (6.5 feet) from other people.
Schools remain closed.
“To tell the truth, for me the time flew, it did not feel long. We played a lot, we are not missing anything, thank God, so we cannot complain,” said Tamara Romero, who took her two children on their motorcycles on Sunday for the morning.
Spain’s health ministry said Sunday that 288 more people died after being diagnosed with the coronavirus, the lowest daily increase in the past month and a decrease of 378 on Saturday and 367 on Friday.
The total number of deaths increased to 23,190, while the total number of cases increased to 207,634 from 205,905 the previous day.
Spain has registered the third highest number of deaths from COVID-19, after the United States and Italy.
The Ministry of Health changed the methodology on Friday to register cases of the virus. It will no longer count antibody tests and will only include positive PCR test results.
In a televised speech on Saturday night, Prime Minister Sanchez said the closure restrictions would be further reduced, allowing people to exercise only as of May 2, if the number of coronaviruses continues to decline.
People living together will be allowed to take short walks together.
He also presented a broader government plan to loosen the blockade at different speeds in different regions, depending on whether they meet the criteria established by the World Health Organization.
“We will not suddenly recover activity in all sectors,” he said. “The de-escalation must be gradual and asymmetric … Not everyone will advance at the same rate, but we will follow the same rules.”
