Intensifying their agitation against the new agricultural laws, the farmers’ unions in Haryana announced that they will continue to allow the free movement of vehicles on the roads until the Center agrees to their demands.
Initially, farmers said that no tolls would be collected on the roads for three days, from December 25 to 27. But with large numbers of people taking to the roads every day to protest at the toll plazas, the rioters announced today that they will do so for free. for an indefinite period.
The president of the Haryana Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU), Gurnam Singh Chaduni, said: “Today, we went to many toll plazas. There was an opinion of the common man that these toll plazas were permanently released. Also in our national executive we have decided to leave the toll plaza free for the movement of vehicles until the government does not accept our demands. To ensure the smooth running of agitation in toll plazas, committees should be formed. Committees consisting of five to 15 members at each toll plaza will speak to officers, if necessary. “
Chaduni also addressed farmers at the Makdoli toll plaza on the Rohtak-Panipat national highway, where the agitators have been performing for the past three days.
Meanwhile, farmers are also confronting JJP leaders more aggressively by gheraoing their residences and offices in different parts of the state. BJP leaders also face similar protests. On Saturday, farmers gathered in the city of Bhiwani in Bahal to plan opposition to the rally proposed by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in the city on Sunday.
However, the CM meeting has already been postponed with the state Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, JP Dalal, claiming that it was held to keep the civic body elections scheduled for Sunday. On Saturday, Khattar did not go to Bhiwani as well, where he was scheduled to inaugurate a building at Chaudhary Bansi Lal University. He inaugurated the building through online mode.
An official university source said the CM’s visit was postponed in light of the farmers’ agitation. However, a spokesperson for Dalal’s office claimed that there was already a program to open the building through online mode only. Khattar had faced a large protest in Ambala recently, where angry farmers had shown him black flags.
On Saturday, protesters gheraoed the residence of Haryana JJP’s president, Nishan Singh, in his native Mamupur village in Fatehabad district, asking him to withdraw government support for BJP-JJP. They said the JJP had won 10 seats in the 2019 Assembly elections primarily due to votes from the farming community.
