Four people, including three from a family, tested positive for COVID-19 in the city, bringing the total number of active positive cases in Coimbatore to nine.
According to sources, a pregnant Karumbukkadai woman, 31, tested positive. Coimbatore Corporation health wing officials, with the support of district administration, took her to Government Medical College and ESI Hospital, the district’s designated hospital to treat patients with COVID-19.
The woman had no travel history in the past 14 days and was not quarantined, the sources added.
The three from a family who tested positive were from Velandipalayam and those who tested positive included the head of the family, a 62-year-old man, his wife, 43 years, and a 10-year-old son. However, the man’s nine-year-old daughter was negative. Sources said the man, who was unwilling to share his travel story, had escaped from the district sometime in the past 15 days to Ponnani in the Malappuram district, Kerala, to take home his wife and children. .
Although he told the Corporation’s health officials that he had brought them home in late March, they had serious reservations about his statement. He had traveled alone in the past 15 days.
Last Friday, he attempted to travel to Kerala again to leave his wife and children, but was detained at the Walayar checkpoint as he did not have an electronic pass. When he approached the district administration for an electronic pass, he was asked to undergo a medical examination to determine the status of COVID-19, and that was when he passed under official radar, sources said.
As soon as the result of his condition came out, Corporation officials took him to the hospital, but not before he showed reluctance to go to the hospital.
On Sunday, the Corporation’s health team visited the man’s neighborhood to collect more than 100 samples. Another Corporation team collected 100 samples from the neighborhood of a Kavundampalayam man, who was examined and reported positive in Chennai.
A sanitary team sprayed disinfectant in the area. On Monday, the health team will continue door-to-door fever surveillance and will keep a close watch on the area.
Corporation sources also said that Karumbukkadai and Velandipalayam did not need to be declared as containment areas, as they were already under the containment plan.
The other current positive cases are in Kuniamuthur (two), Ukkadam (one), Kavundampalayam (one) and Vellakinar (one).
The staff reporter adds: Meanwhile, the Coimbatore district, which is now an orange zone compared to COVID-19, has taken steps to further combat the spread of the disease.
As a precautionary measure, district administration and the Department of Health will impose restrictions on people coming from other districts and other states to Coimbatore. These people must remain in home quarantine for 14 days.
If such individuals have a fever or COVID-19 symptoms, they will be transferred to isolation facilities. Swab samples will be collected from them for the COVID-19 test. Negative results will be advised to be quarantined at home for 14 days.
In addition to these measures, all containment strategies that were followed during the closure will be continued, said a Health Department official.
