Former Punjab MP BJP resigns, criticizes party's 'callousness' to farmers: report

Harinder Singh Khalsa is a former member of parliament.

Chandigarh:

Former Lok Sabha deputy Harinder Singh Khalsa resigned from the BJP to protest “due to the callousness shown by party and government leaders towards the sufferings of farmers, their wives and children who protest against the three agrarian laws,” he reported. this Saturday the ANI news agency.

BJP leaders in Punjab have faced intense backlash over three new central government laws that farmers fear will eventually dismantle regulated markets and prevent the government from buying wheat and rice at guaranteed prices.

Thousands of farmers from various states have camped on the outskirts of New Delhi for more than a month, blocking roads to demand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government repeal farm laws passed in September with little debate.

Assuring farmers that they face no threat, Prime Minister Modi has said that the protests were politically motivated and that “some people” were spreading lies and rumors about farmers’ problems.

Khalsa had won over the Fatehgarh Sahib of Punjab in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections as a member of the Aam Aadmi Party, but joined the BJP in 2019 after a break with the central party leadership Arvind Kejriwal.
