Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was admitted Sunday afternoon to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after he complained of chest pain.

According to sources, the main leader of Congress entered the hospital at 8.40 p.m. and kept under observation in the cardio-thoracic room.

The 87-year-old patient has been admitted to a hospital room and not to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit). He was admitted by Dr. Nitish Naik, professor of cardiology at AIIMS.

“All his parameters are fine. He is under observation at AIIMS,” said a source close to him, adding that they took him to the hospital after feeling “uneasy.”

Singh is one of the main leaders of the opposition Congress and currently represents Rajasthan in the Upper House of Parliament. He was prime minister between 2004 and 2014.

Rajasthan Prime Minister Ashok Gehlot expressed concern about Singh’s health. “I am very concerned to learn that former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh ji has been admitted to AIIMS. I wish him a speedy recovery and I pray for his good health and long life,” Gehlot tweeted.

The former prime minister has also had previous health problems. He underwent heart bypass surgery at AIIMS in 2009, in which five grafts, channels to avoid blocked arteries, were implanted, in a surgery that also lasted more than 10 hours.

In May 2008, he had cataract surgery, and in September 2007, he had prostate surgery. He also underwent a bypass in the UK in 1991.
