Pranab Mukherjee, an elderly statesman and one of the country’s most respected politicians, died at the age of 84. The former president of India, who tested positive for coronavirus, had been in a coma after brain surgery earlier this month.

This morning, the Delhi military hospital had reported a deterioration in his condition. He had suffered septic shock due to his lung infection, the Army Research and Reference Hospital said.

Mr. Mukherjee was admitted to the hospital on August 10 and underwent surgery the same day to remove a clot in his brain. He had tested positive for COVID-19 at the hospital. “On a visit to the hospital for a separate procedure, I have tested positive for COVID-19 today. I ask people who have been in contact with me in the last week to please self-isolate and get tested for COVID-19,” had posted.

He developed a lung infection and kidney dysfunction in recent days, according to doctors.

On Wednesday, the hospital said that Mukherjee’s “kidney parameters are a bit altered.”

In recent weeks, there has been a lot of wishes for him to get better soon from politicians of all parties for the veteran, who was Minister of Finance, Defense and Foreign Affairs in various governments until he assumed the highest office in the country.

Mukherjee was President of India from 2012 to 2017.

The daughter of former President and Congress leader Sharmistha Mukherjee, in a tweet, had remembered this time last year when she received the Bharat Ratna, the highest civil honor.
