Patna:

Gupteshwar Pandey, a former Bihar police chief, has joined the ruling Janata Dal United ahead of the elections. The ceremony took place at the official residence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar this evening. Large gatherings are banned in view of the coronavirus pandemic and photos from the event showed a handful of leaders, including Bihar Assembly Speaker Vijay Singh, Acting Party Chairman Ashok Choudhary, and Lok Leader. Sabha, Lalan Singh, smiling for the camera.

Yesterday, he met with the Chief Minister and stated that it was just a “thank you” session. “I did not discuss anything political with the Chief Minister. I have worked with him for a long time and after retirement I just wanted to thank him for his support,” he told reporters.

Pandey, who resigned from the police position last week, had been shy about his future plans. But in an interview with NDTV, he gave a broad hint, saying “What is the harm if I join politics? Is it unconstitutional, unethical or illegal?”

“I am the DGP of the people. Janta ka DGP. The Buxar board will decide what my next step should be, whether they want me to join politics or not … I am a child of the earth. I have served in 34 districts”, had said.

Pandey, 59, made headlines with her role in the Sushant Rajput case and her comment questioning the actor’s friend Rhea Chakraborty’s “aukat (stature)” for her comments on Nitish Kumar.

His statements in defense of the Prime Minister had also drawn attention for their political character, unusual for an IPS official.
