Mumbai: Maharashtra’s former prime minister and current PWD minister Ashok Chavan on Sunday tested positive for the coronavirus. This is the second case in the Maharashtra government with a high NCP leader before contracting the virus in the month of April.
Previously, a senior NCP leader had been infected and had been in self-quarantine after some of the helpers and security personnel were found to be Covid-19 positive. A local report stated that the minister was moved to a private hospital after he began having trouble breathing.
In the neighboring state of Gujarat, the Congress MLA Imran Khedawala had tested positive for Covid-19 last month, after chief minister Vijay Rupani went into self-quarantine.
Senior Congress corporator and ex-leader of the opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Ahmedabad (AMC), Badruddin Shaikh, a 67-year-old, had succumbed to the virus after a respirator for over a week. Shaikh had been hospitalized in the past 11 days.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra has recorded 3,041 Covid-19 cases, in 24 hours, the highest daily peak, having the state of mind 50,231. With 58 deaths caused by the pandemic was reported during the day, the number of deaths in the state happened in 1635, the official said. This was the eighth day in a row, when the state reported that more than 2,000 new cases of coronavirus, he said.
