Mumbai: Ashok Chavan, Maharashtra’s cabinet minister and senior Congress leader, who has tested positive for the new coronavirus, was Monday admitted to a Bombay hospital, a close aide, said.

He became the second cabinet minister after NCP leader Jitendra Awhad to test COVID-19 positive. “The minister had contracted the infection for a couple of days ago and is undergoing treatment,” a Health official had said on Sunday.

Chavan had attended some meetings in the last week in Mumbai, before travelling back to his home district of Marathwada.

Earlier on Monday, the Maharashtra PWD minister came out of his home in the city of Mumbai, in an ambulance, his assistant, he said, adding that he was admitted in the breach Candy hospital as he has been diabetic and a regular visitor at the hospital, which is located in the south of Mumbai.

The minister traveled a distance of 500 km of nearly 12 hours of Marathwada, in the ambulance, as a special chartered plane could not be fixed, the aide said.

The minister was accompanied by both a doctor and an assistant, said.

“It is not independent of the cabin for the pilot and crew on a chartered plane. Had members of the crew of the plane to Mumbai with the minister, who had been forced to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine. No one was willing to take that risk,” he said.

He said the driver of the minister had tested positive for coronavirus, a couple of days ago, after the minister isolated himself until his coronavirus test results were received.

“It was decided to change the minister of Mumbai as their primary care physician has been attached to the breach Candy hospital,” the assistant said.

A video clip of Chavan left his home in the district and boarding an ambulance was broadcast by the news channels on Monday morning.

Previously, the Housing Minister of state Jitendra Awhad had tested positive for coronavirus. He recovered after being admitted to a hospital in Mumbai for more than two weeks.
