A former High Court judge, CS Karnan, was arrested today for offensive comments he allegedly made against female judges and judges’ wives, which were posted on YouTube.
The former judge was arrested by the Chennai police.
He had reportedly made defamatory and offensive comments against Supreme Court and High Court justices, the judges’ wives, and uploaded them to the Internet.
The Madras High Court had harshly criticized the police for failing to act on the case.
In 2017, former Judge Karnan became the first sitting superior court judge to be sentenced to prison. He was sentenced to six months for contempt of court when he was a judge at the Calcutta High Court.
At the time, a seven-judge Supreme Court tribunal, then headed by Chief Justice JS Khehar, had asked the West Bengal police chief to detain him. He evaded arrest for weeks after being sentenced to prison until he was located on his mobile phone.
He was also the first acting Superior Court judge to appear before the Supreme Court. He was appointed a judge of the Madras High Court for the first time in 2009. He was transferred to the Calcutta High Court in 2016. He wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then to President Pranab Mukherjee accusing the senior judges of corruption.
Last year, the former judge contested the national elections as a candidate for the Anti-Corruption Dynamic Party (ACDP) that floated in 2018.
