The former CIA chief called the murder of a top Iranian nuclear scientist on Friday a “criminal” act that runs the risk of fueling conflict in the region. John Brennan said he did not know who was guilty of the murder of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.

“This was a very reckless and criminal act. There is a risk of lethal retaliation and a new round of regional conflict, ”Brennan said in a series of tweets. “I don’t know if a foreign government authorized or carried out the assassination of Fakhrizadeh,” he said. “Such an act of state-sponsored terrorism would be a flagrant violation of international law and would encourage more governments to carry out deadly attacks against foreign officials.”
