Even as tributes and condolences were poured out for social activist Swami Agnivesh, who passed away on Friday, a retired police officer has caused outrage by calling the renowned activist a “saffron-robed anti-Hindu” and referring to his death as “goodbye.” . .
On the social media platform Twitter, IPS officer M Nageswara Rao launched a scathing attack on Agnivesh, who was often targeted by Hindu extremists for his comments and beliefs.
“GOOD RIDDANCE @swamiagnivesh. You were an anti-Hindu wearing saffron clothes. You did enormous damage to Hinduism. I am ashamed that you were born as a Telugu Brahmin,” Rao wrote while sharing the news of his death. He went on to call Agnivesh a “lion in sheep’s clothing” and added: “My complaint against Yamaraj is why did he wait so long?”
While Nageshwar is no longer a serving officer, he previously served as Acting Director of the India Crime Branch for a brief stint in 2019.
The insensitive comment comes just a day after the death of the renowned activist and former Haryana Minister of Education, who passed away due to cirrhosis of the liver at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in Delhi after being seriously ill.
Rao’s comment caused outrage on social media with many criticizing the serving IPS officer for his callousness, especially after the death of an esteemed public figure. Social activist and philanthropist Harsh Mander took to microblogging to share his outrage.
It is very sad to read this tweet from a serving police officer, flaunting such discourtesy and community prejudice towards Swami Agnivesh, a man much taller and better than he will ever be, right after his passing. That you feel like you can so blatantly show your intolerance is reflected in those who lead the nation https://t.co/5Xcar3yYFj

Rao’s comments also drew criticism from other IPS officials such as RK Vij, who called Rao’s tweet “sad” and an “insult” to human life.
The former acting head of CBI was even denounced by the Police Foundation of India, an independent think tank that serves as a forum for serving and retired police officers. Historian Irfan Habib also responded to the tweet.
By tweeting such hateful messages from a retired officer posing as an IPS officer, he has desecrated the police uniform he was wearing and embarrassed the government. It demoralizes the entire police force in the country, especially young officers. https://t.co/qOiI8D6dkO

You are a disgrace. Can you imagine what he must have done as a police officer? Abusing the dead may be Hindutva, but it is certainly not Hinduism. Better late than never. Get a treatment. https://t.co/Shh4zlmduc

Other Twitter users also expressed disbelief at the tweet.
It is disturbing to see a retired IPS officer spouting such hatred. I am not an admirer of the deceased nor do I have any great impressions of him. But this hateful tweet is very subjective. Aren’t cops supposed to be objective in their approach to others?

A true Hindu is about being a good human being. If you were part of that, you wouldn’t speak ill of the dead. Hindutva radicals are, though a pro at it. They are the ones described in Kalyug!

A defiant Rao, however, doubled down on his previous tweet by tweeting, “Correction: read” Lobo “for” Leon “in the tweet above.”
Correction: read “Wolf” for “Lion” in the tweet above.

Swami Agnivesh has been at the forefront of social reform and against oppressive government regimes since 1977, when he resigned as Haryana’s education minister after the state government’s inaction against the police who opened fire on the protests against bonded labor. .
More recently, Agnivesh was attacked from the right and was even allegedly attacked by the BJP youth wing in Jharkhand in 2018 after he said that the ice stalagmite statue inside Amarnath was just an ordinary formation that had no special religious significance. . Many at that time had accused the reformer Arya Samaji of being anti-Hindu and insulting Lord Shiva.
Swami Agnivesh was again attacked in Delhi a month later.
