The veteran congressional leader and former prime minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) on Thursday after a drop in his oxygen saturation level. Last month he had tested positive for the coronavirus.
The 85-year-old man, who was checked into a private hospital cabin, was reportedly transferred to the ICU for effective monitoring. His condition is claimed to be stable now.
“I visited GMCH’s new ICU to see ex-CM Tarun Gogoi, asked him about his health, and prayed to God for his speedy recovery,” Assam Congressional Unit President Ripun Bora tweeted after visiting GMCH on Thursday.
Gogoi, who was CM for three consecutive terms from 2001 to 2016, was tested positive for Covid-19 on August 26, after which he was admitted to GMCH. The Assam government formed an eight-member medical team to monitor his health parameters regularly.
There was a sudden drop in the oxygen saturation level on August 31, but it returned to normal after immediate intervention by doctors.
Gogoi tested negative for Covid-19 last week, but has stayed at GMCH until his health fully recovers.
