The health condition of former Assam Prime Minister Tarun Gogoi is critical, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday. Gogoi’s condition deteriorated with multiple organ failure and he was left unconscious with shortness of breath, Sarma added.
His son and deputy leader of the Congress party Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, tagged a tweet with an update on the former prime minister’s health.
86-year-old Tarun Gogoi was admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on November 2 due to post-Covid complications. He was later subjected to invasive ventilation, Sarma said.
“Around afternoon today, his condition deteriorated with breathing difficulties. So the doctors started an intubation ventilator, which is a ventilation machine, ”said Sarma, who rushed to the GMCH on Saturday to inquire about Gogoi’s health.
“Efforts are underway to revive their organs with drugs and other means. Doctors will also try dialysis. However, the next 48-72 hours are very critical and we are doing our best, ”he said.
Gogoi was first admitted to GMCH on August 26 after his Covid-19 report came back positive and he was discharged on October 25, after two months of hospitalization.
The GMCH team of physicians serving the former chief minister is in continuous contact with the physicians with experts from the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.
