Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s health condition deteriorated with multi-organ failure and he has lost consciousness with shortness of breath, Assam’s Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
The 86-year congressional political veteran, who was on non-invasive ventilation (NIV) since entering the Gauhati Hospital and Medical College (GMCH) on Nov.2 due to post-COVID complications, was placed on invasive ventilation, he said. the minister. .
“Around afternoon today, her condition deteriorated with breathing difficulties. So the doctors started an intubation ventilator, which is a ventilation machine,” said Sarma, who rushed to the GMCH to inquire about the health of Gogoi.
Tarun Gogoi is “completely unconscious” and has suffered from multi-organ failure, the minister added.
“Efforts are being made to revive his organs with drugs and other means. Doctors will also try dialysis. However, the next 48-72 hours are very critical and we are doing everything we can,” he said.
Sarma said GMCH doctors are in constant contact with experts from the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi and ruled out any possibility of transferring him out of state in this condition.
“We regularly update the family and each decision is made with their consent only,” he added.
On October 25, the three-time former prime minister, who was in treatment for COVID-19 and other post-recovery complications, was discharged from the GMCH after spending exactly two months there.
Mr. Gogoi had tested positive for COVID-19 on August 25 and was admitted to the GMCH the following day.
