For the first time, Maharashtra reports more than 20,000 COVID-19 cases in one day

Maharashtra currently has 2,20,661 active cases of Coronavirus.

In a grim milestone, Maharashtra on Saturday reported its highest single-day peak in COVID-19 cases at 20,489, bringing the total infection count to 8,83,862, data from the state health department showed.

With 312 deaths due to the highly contagious virus in the past 24 hours, the total number of deaths rose to 26,276 in the state, he said.

This is the fourth day in a row that Maharashtra reported a record number of new cases of Coronavirus.

Prior to this, the state had reported the highest single-day peak of 19,218 cases on Friday.

Mumbai reported 1,737 new cases and 33 deaths, bringing its count to 1,53,712 and the death count to 7,832.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, speaking about the increase in COVID-19 cases in Mumbai in the past two days, said the situation shows that the state administration will face the challenge of containing the outbreak more vigorously in the next two or three months.

A total of 10,801 people were discharged on Saturday, bringing the number of recoveries to 6,36,574, according to the government statement. The recovery rate in the state stood at 72.01 percent.

The state currently has 2,20,661 active cases of Coronavirus.

Meanwhile, three of the four states hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic – Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka – have been instructed by the Center to take aggressive measures to control the spread of the infectious virus.

The Union Health Ministry on Saturday ordered the three states to keep their death rates below one percent.

The death rate in Maharashtra fell below 3 percent for the first time on Saturday.
