Incessant rains on Wednesday night have hit several areas of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Pune and Thane. Waterlogging has been reported in many areas of the financial capital of India. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that moderate to heavy rains and strong winds would continue in the city and suburbs of Mumbai for the next two days. The meteorological department has issued a red alert for Ratnagiri and an orange alert for Konkan, Mumbai and the surrounding areas. Pune, Satara and Kolhapur all recorded rainfall of more than 100mm on Wednesday, said KS Hosalikar, deputy general manager of Mumbai, MET.
Here are the latest updates on the Mumbai / Pune rains:
1) After a heavy rain yesterday, Mumbai, Thane and Palghar are expected to receive the same tonight as well as thunderstorms off the coast.
2) “Pune and Satara also expect to receive good rains in the next 24 hours,” Hosalikar said. AND ME.
3) Due to heavy rains since Wednesday, Kalyani Nagar in Pune witnessed a situation similar to a flood. There was a partial disruption in mobile connectivity for Vodafone Idea users from Maharashtra as Kalyani Nagar is their key site, the company said.
4) According to a PTI report, an official said, fifty people from two Solapur villages were evacuated, while four were swept away by a flood current.
5) An SDO said, forty people were rescued from Baramati of Pune, according to a AND ME report.
6) The National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) deployed its 24 fully equipped teams to Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana, said SN Pradhan, Deputy General of the NDRF. AND ME. After witnessing a flood-like situation, an NDRF team was dispatched to rescue a village in Mohol tehsil of the neighboring Solapur district, an official said.
7) Forty people were rescued from the village of Nimgaon Ketki, one of the areas affected by the floods in Pune, while rescue operations for another 15 from the village are ongoing.
8) Following an alert for heavy rain in Pune and the surrounding regions, Savitribai Phule Pune University postponed its online and offline final exams scheduled for today.
9) In an official statement, Maharashtra’s Senior Deputy Minister Ajit Pawar called on authorities to begin an on-site inspection of crops and houses in parts of Konkan, western and central Maharashtra, southern Marathwada and Vidarbha.
10) Pawar also ordered a local administration in Pune to start relief work immediately.
