Flooded roads, traffic disrupted in many areas of Hyderabad after heavy rains

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rains in isolated locations over Telangana through October 13.

Heavy rains, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, hit Hyderabad and its suburbs on Friday night, leaving various parts of the city flooded. Vehicle traffic was stopped in some areas due to flooding on the roads, after heavy downpours for more than 2-3 hours.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rains in isolated locations over Telangana through October 13. Electrical storms accompanied by lightning are very likely to occur in isolated locations.

As of 8pm on Friday, Asifnagar recorded ‘very heavy’ 15.10cm rains, followed by Shaikpet (12.7cm), Gandipet (12.5cm) and Khairatabad (12.30cm). This is the highest rainfall received on a single day during the current season.

According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS), several other areas of the city and the suburbs recorded rainfall of 7 to 11 cm.

Sudden rains caught motorists caught in traffic during rush hour by surprise. Traffic had to be diverted at some points due to road flooding.

Traffic was disrupted in busy areas such as Panjagutta, Ameerpet, Khairatabad, Somajguda, Begumpet, Nampally, Abids, Koti, Begum Bazar, MJ Market, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Mehdipatnam, Toli Chowki, Raidurgam, and Gachibowli.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) lobbied its emergency crews to go into service to clean up the waterlogging. Several areas reported downed trees on the roads, while some areas also suffered power outages. Electricity officials warned people to stay away from power poles and transformers.

Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) evacuated people from low-lying towns around the Raj Bhavan Road. Floods were also reported in the Mehdipatanam and Nampally areas where water entered several houses. GHMC recorded up to 168 cases of waterlogging and overflowing drains, The New Indian Express reported.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar has called on people to avoid non-essential movements on the roads as there is traffic congestion in some places. “Police officers and GHMC are working to ensure minimal inconvenience is caused to you,” he tweeted.

IMD has also issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rains in isolated locations in many districts of Telangana.
