People wishing to travel to Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut Industrial Zone from Delhi can expect travel time to be significantly reduced once the express train starts operating.
On Friday, Shri Durga Shanker Mishra, secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and president of the National Capital Region Transportation Corporation (NCRTC), presented on Friday the first look and design of the semi-high trains speed in the presence of Shri Vinay. Kumar Singh, Managing Director of NCRTC, all members of the NCRTC Board of Directors and other senior officials from MoHUA, NCRTC and Bombardier India.
The aerodynamic semi-high speed trains will have a 2 + 2 transverse seating arrangement with comfortable seating positions, standing spaces and plug-in automatic sliding doors. The air-conditioned trains will also provide luggage space, CCTV cameras for added security, and offer the option of business class seating, as well as a designated women’s car on the six-car trains for regional services.

The new trains will accommodate around 900 passengers in the three-car train configuration for Meerut’s local transit services. When configured on six-car trains for RRTS, the trains will be able to accommodate up to 1,790 passengers to significantly increase public transport capacity between Delhi and Meerut. With their modular design, RRTS trains can be expanded to nine-car trains.
The 82 kilometer Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS has a design speed of 180 kmph, one of the fastest in India and will have 24 stations. The trains will reduce the travel time from Meerut to Delhi to less than 60 minutes and the expected number of passengers is around 800,000 daily passengers. Local transit services between Meerut South and Modipuram Depot Station with 13 stations over 21 km on the RRTS infrastructure will provide local mobility services for the citizens of Meerut and provide efficient regional connectivity.
“These energy efficient trains with exceptional ergonomics and low life cycle costs will contribute to making India’s first RRTS futuristic and sustainable. Packed with cutting edge traveler-centric features, the RRTS will transform the way we people travel in set a new benchmark for similar projects in the future, “said Vinay Kumar Singh, Managing Director of National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC).
“Bombardier is proud to be a partner in NCRTC’s flagship project to deliver the new RRTS trains. These trains are being designed locally and incorporate the latest technologies and features. Bombardier will deliver and maintain RRTS trains in accordance with our country’s ‘Make in India’ guidelines. These energy efficient semi-high speed trains will improve the passenger experience in terms of comfort, safety, travel time and will be a game changer in the regional rail segment in India, benefiting millions of people and contributing to socio-economic development, “he said. Rajeev Joisar.
The next generation RRTS rolling stock will be the first of its kind in India with a design speed of 180 km / h. With a radiant stainless steel outer body, these aerodynamic RRTS trains will be lightweight and air-conditioned.
Discussing the benefits of the project, Shri Vinay Kumar Singh, Managing Director of NCRTC, said: “The rolling stock of India’s first RRTS has been designed with the vision to meet the aspirations of New India. The RRTS rolling stock will be energy efficient with approximately 30% regeneration during braking.
NCRTC has awarded the rolling stock work comprehensive long-term maintenance built in by the manufacturer, thus leveraging the benefits of life cycle costing. I am confident that RRTS will prove to be the transportation backbone for the people of NCR and define a new benchmark in the transportation sector that will enable the overall growth of the region. “
The prototype is scheduled to roll off the production line in 2022 and will be put into public use after extensive testing. NCRTC will acquire 30 sets of trains of 6 cars each to operate regional rail services throughout the corridor and 10 sets of trains of 3 cars each to operate local transit services in Meerut. All rolling stock for the RRTS Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor will be manufactured at Bombardier’s Savli plant in Gujarat.
The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor is one of the three prioritized RRTS corridors being implemented in phase 1. The 82 km long Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor is the first RRTS corridor to be implemented in India. The corridor will reduce the travel time between Delhi and Meerut by about 1/3. The travel time from Delhi to Meerut will be reduced to less than an hour from 3 to 4 hours by road today.
Civil construction work on a section about 50 km long between Sahibabad and Shatabdi Nagar, Meerut is in full swing, including the construction of four stations: Ghaziabad, Sahibabad, Guldhar and Duhai. The priority section of the corridor is scheduled to enter service in 2023, while the entire corridor will be commissioned in 2025.
The other two RRTS corridors in Phase I are Delhi-Gurugram-SNB and Delhi-Panipat. Pre-construction activities are in full swing for the Delhi-Gurugram-SNB corridor and its DPR is under active consideration by the Government of India for sanction. The DPR of the RRTS corridor from Delhi to Panipat is also actively being considered by the respective state governments for approval.
