Five workers died and 13 were injured when a truck overturned near the Patha village in the Narsinghpur district of Madhya Pradesh on Saturday night.
The mango-laden truck, on its way from Hyderabad to Agra, turned sideways on the road, catching the workers who were sitting in the space between boxes. There were 18 people, including the driver and at least one cleaner, in the vehicle. No other vehicle was involved in the accident.
Narsinghpur SP Gurkaran Singh told The Indian Express that the workers were probably traveling illegally. He said it is unclear where the vehicle had been boarded from. The condition of the wounded is stable and one of the workers was coughing and his sample has been sent for testing, Singh said.
In charge of the Mungwani Police Station, Shivmangal Rathod said the workers belonged to Uttar Pradesh. He said the wounded were being treated at a hospital in Narsinghpur.
The accident occurred a day after 16 migrant workers from the Shahdol and Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh were hit by a freight train when they slept on a railroad track in Aurangabad in Maharashtra early Friday.
