It’s Mother’s Day, but unfortunately this year there is no chance to invite your mother to a meal at her favorite restaurant or ask her for flowers or gifts. But there are still things you can do to make your mother’s life a little easier and show her how much she means to you.

We’ve put together a list of five things you can teach your mother to do using apps, which can make it easier for you to manage your money in the comfort of your home. Show it through installing and using the right apps to simplify everything from transferring money to shopping for groceries during closing, and even afterward.

Banking: If your mother doesn’t use digital banking and insists on going to the bank for every errand, there is no better time to break the habit. Most banks now allow you to activate cooking online from the comfort of your home. Just follow the steps: go to the bank’s website and click on “new user”. Use the customer’s ID (it can be found in the welcome kit the bank gives you when you open an account, as well as the bank’s checkbook, passbook, and other communications) and the account number and PIN for the debit card to authenticate Enter the OTP sent to the registered mobile phone number to complete the process.

A registered one, she can send or receive money; verify your account balance; manage your deposits etc. without having to go to the bank. But make sure she downloads the authentic app from the bank, and not a fraudulent one.

Digital payments: While a banking app will take care of sending and receiving money, you can simplify the process of making small payments for your mother by helping her learn to use a payment app like PayTM, PhonePe, and BHIM UPI. You can help her pay bills and play at local grocery stores, store owners, etc. But be aware that opening a new account may require going through a KYC process, which may not be feasible at this time. For example, while you can use the PayTM application without KYC formalities, you cannot send or receive money to or from other PayTM accounts.

The tax return: If your mother wins or is retired, you must file your tax return. But there is a chance that you may trust a CPA or a company or relative to file your ITR on your behalf. This is your chance to help her become self-sufficient when it comes to taxes. The tax filing process has been simplified quite a bit now, and is even easier with the help of electronic filing applications like ClearTax and Taxspanner.

“Electronic filing applications minimize the effort you have to make. You can upload Form 16 and all the information is pre-filled for you. The guide text at each step makes the process easier and the application is intuitive. It helps you with processes like calculating your capital gains and making sure to claim certain deductions even if you lose them, said Archit Gupta, founder and CEO of ClearTax. So help your mother find the correct app, and the rest should be self explanatory.

Fraud protection: Older people are more vulnerable to fraud because they are less familiar with technology, such as online transactions and authentication processes. One way to help your mother avoid phishing applications and malicious software that she could accidentally download is to install anti-virus or anti-phishing software on her device. But another option you might consider is to have it install a caller ID app.

“I have found applications like Trucaller very useful. Parents often feel the need to answer every call. I have seen more educated elders trust a fraudulent call because it sounded “official”. Caller ID applications can help you identify and avoid them. The application builds on its database and displays a “fraud” or “interval” label when these calls come in, “said Mandar Agashe, founder and vice president of Sarvatra Technologies.

While this is not a foolproof process, it could help your mother avoid dealing with many misleading and fraudulent calls.

Purchase needs: This is one that you have been using for a long time, and possibly much more frequently in recent times. Apps like BigBasket, Amazon Fresh, FreshToHome, and several others can deliver groceries and other necessities to your mother’s door, and are absolutely essential in today’s scenario. Since seniors are more vulnerable to serious covid-19 infections, she could take much more advantage of it, as venturing into grocery shopping could be an especially high risk for her, even after the blockage is lifted.

Showing your mother the app store and familiarizing her with the many features that different apps can help her with is a great gift for Mother’s Day. But remember that depending on how tech savvy your mother is, it can take some time and patience.
