Dhaka: The first group of 168 Indian students, stranded in Bangladesh due to global travel restrictions linked to the coronavirus, went home on Friday on a special Air India flight, authorities here said.

The evacuation flight that takes the students from here will land in Srinagar directly.

Authorities are also preparing more such flights to facilitate other Indians as part of Operation Vande Bharat: a homecoming, India’s massive repatriation operation to take its stranded citizens abroad.

The Indian High Commission in Bangladesh launched a dedicated link on its website for the registration of Indians who wish to return to India. ‘

High Commissioner Riva Ganguly Das interacted with students at the airport as they prepared to complete the paperwork to fly home.

On the occasion, he posted a video message on Twitter saying that as part of Operation Vande Bharat, India’s first flight from Bangladesh with stranded students will go directly to Srinagar.

(The flight) only carries students. Students are enrolled in medical schools in the country. We were in constant contact with them and their universities have also taken good care of them.

He also said that as part of a massive exercise by the Indian government, a total of seven flights will be operated from Dhaka.

The Indian envoy also expressed his satisfaction that the students return home before Eid.

On Twitter, the Indian mission posted photos and videos of the first group of Indian students at the airport.

Today, we are preparing to send home our stranded students in Bangladesh. Air India’s first flight from Dhaka will take them home to Srinagar on 8/5/20. More flights are also being prepared.
