Days after the enactment of the ordinance against forced conversion, a Muslim was arrested in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. The arrest was made five days after the first lawsuit against love jihad was registered at the Deorania police station, while the defendant has been sent to jail.

The 21-year-old defendant was reportedly having an affair with a Hindu girl and was pressuring her to convert to Islam. After which the girl’s father married her to someone else during the COVID-19 lock activated.

According to the complaint, the defendant threatened to kill her and on November 28 a lawsuit was filed against Owais under the Uttar Pradesh Law Against Forced Conversion Section 3/5, Section 504, 506 of the Indian Penal Code. On Wednesday, police arrested those charged in the affair.

The SSP in charge, Dr. Sansar Singh, said that the defendant has been arrested under sections 504 (offending a person), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Religious Conversion Act. Forced from Uttar Pradesh 3/5.

The Prohibition Ordinance of the Law Against Religious Conversion of 2020 was passed by UP Governor Anandi Ben on Saturday. Under the ordinance, a severe punishment provision of up to 10 years has been established if someone is found guilty under the law. It says that if only the girl’s religion is changed to marry, not only will the marriage be declared invalid, but those who help in the conversion can also face a jail term of up to 10 years. The ordinance further establishes that lying, greed or any other fraudulent form or conversion to marriage will be a non-bail offense.
