Fire breaks out in Serum Institute building in Pune, vaccine production not affected: Report

On Thursday a major fire broke out at the Pune-based vaccine manufacturing company Serum Institute of India.

The company is involved in the production of the Covid-19 Covishield vaccine, which has recently been granted an emergency use authorization in India.

According to ANI reports, the fire broke out at the gate of Terminal 1 of the Serum Institute of India in Pune. It continued to wreak havoc on the fourth and fifth floors of the SEZ3 building inside Terminal 1.

Ten firefighters have arrived at the scene of the accident.

However, this mishap would not affect the production of the coronavirus vaccine, Reuters reported citing a close source. The site where the fire broke out is a building under construction at the SII. The vaccine and the vaccine manufacturing plant are safe, ANI further cited.

India has already launched a massive coronavirus vaccination campaign under which two vaccines, Covishield by Serum and Covaxin by Bharat Biotech, are administered to front-line healthcare workers across the country.

IBS has already manufactured 50 million doses of the Covishield vaccine with funds at risk. Overall, the vaccine giants are aiming to develop 3.2 billion doses of coronavirus vaccines at their facilities in India. The company increases its capacity every week.

More details are expected.
