FIR filed against Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi under pandemic law for march to Hathras

A first information report (FIR) was filed against Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra under pandemic law and Section 144 during Thursday’s march to Hathras.

Congressional leaders were going to visit the relative of the Dalit woman who was abducted in Hathras when they were detained by the Uttar Pradesh police. Fifteen days after her rape, the 19-year-old victim died in a Delhi hospital on Tuesday.

The Gandhis were detained while walking towards their destination after their vehicles were stopped on the Yamuna Highway, citing the imposition of Section 144.

An FIR was filed for violation of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) 144 (the section imposed for not allowing the gathering of more than four people) as well as the violation of the pandemic act against Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and unknown protesters, Commissioner of Gautambuddhanagar from the police, Alok Singh said.

The Gandhi brothers were taken away in a police jeep Thursday night and kept in a guest house for some time. They were then released and escorted back to Delhi by UP police.

Congress had claimed that the leaders were arrested by the police. “Shri Rahul Gandhi, Smt Priyanka Gandhi and senior congressional leaders have been arrested by UP police,” the party said on Twitter.
