Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has been appointed Chairman of the Governing Council of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).

“The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting today announced Shekhar Kapur as the new President of the FTII Society and President of the Governing Council of FTII. His mandate will be until March 3, 2023, ”read a statement from the Pune-based FTII.

Kapur, known for films such as Masoom (1983), Mr India (1987), Elizabeth (1998) and Bandit Queen (1994), will replace television producer BP Singh. Singh’s term had ended in March 2020, but he was granted an extension due to the coronavirus situation.

Singh was appointed president of the FTII in December 2018 after his predecessor, actor Anupam Kher, abruptly resigned from office citing international shooting assignments.

The FTII student body said that Kapur’s appointment comes at an important time. “There has been a constant attack on public educational institutions in the country with continuous rate increases and curbs on student voices of dissent and representation. We hope that Shekar Kapur, a prominent filmmaker, will carry forward the vision of the institution and carry it forward. We strongly urge you to take note of the ongoing fee increase issues and the restriction of student voices on the Academic Council, ”said Aadith V Sathvin, who leads the FTII student body.

The FTII Society has 24 members comprising 12 ex officio members and 12 people from the field of art and culture.
