Mumbai:
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) today summoned filmmaker Firoz Nadiadwala in connection with the arrest of his wife for marijuana possession, putting the spotlight on a Bollywood drug supply syndicate.
Nadiadwala’s wife, Shabana Saeed, was arrested Sunday after investigators allegedly found 10 grams of marijuana at her home in Juhu, Mumbai, during a raid, authorities said.
NCB Mumbai area director Sameer Wankhede had previously told the PTI news agency that Firoz Nadiadwala was summoned by the anti-drug agency, but did not appear.
Nadiadwala’s residence was searched on Sunday following the arrest of drug dealer Wahid Abdul Kadir Shaikh in Andheri a few days earlier. While the agency was tracking Shaikh’s clients, NCB officers stumbled upon his link to Ms Saeed, who had allegedly bought 10 grams of the contraband from him, according to NCB.
The agency had previously arrested four people as part of its crackdown on drug traffickers and their clients linked to the Hindi film industry in recent months.
He had also questioned Bollywood actors Deepika Padukone, Rakulpreet Singh, Shraddha Kapoor and Sara Ali Khan as part of the investigation in a separate case.
Today, the NCB also registered the residence of actor Arjun Rampal in connection with an investigation into the drug union in the industry.
The film industry has been hit by allegations of rampant drug abuse after investigations showed actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who died by suicide on June 14 this year, was addicted to drugs. After her death, Rhea Chakraborty was arrested by the OCN and later released after she was granted bail by the Bombay High Court.
“I will be a liar if I say that this problem does not exist in our industry. It exists, like all industries. But all people in all professions are not involved in such problems. This is impossible,” said actor Akshay Kumar. he said in a short video posted in October, addressing allegations of widespread drug abuse in the film industry.
