In response to the prime minister’s speech on Friday, farmers’ unions, protesting against the new farm laws, warned of a “long struggle”, saying it was clear that the government did not seem to be in the mood to back down from the laws.
Jagmohan Singh, general secretary of BKU (Dakaunda) and member of the working committee of the All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC), said the prime minister’s speech showed that the government was not going to repeal the laws.
“But we will not leave (the borders of Delhi) until they are repealed. Our fight is against anti-democratic forms … first, they make laws without consulting, then they say they are for our good … then they make amendments and say that the laws cannot be withdrawn. But why did you make those laws in the first place? ” he said.
Gurnam Singh Chaduni, President of BKU (Haryana), echoed Jagmohan Singh: “Time and again, we were asked for our proposals. But they have yet to give us a concrete proposal. If their intentions had been good, they would not have enacted these laws. Now, what is the use of talking about amendments? We won’t give in until we win. “
P Krishna Prasad, AIKSCC working committee member and former Kerala MLA, said: “PM is isolated from his allies who support farmers. Our fight is for a policy, not for a fund. So we are ready for the long term. “
Jhanda Singh Jethuke, Senior Vice President of BKU (Ugrahan), said the Prime Minister was “contradicting” his Minister of Agriculture. “On December 5, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar congratulated us for holding the protest peacefully and not being under the influence of any political party. Now the prime minister says that farmers are being misled by the political parties that are organizing events here on their behalf. So who do we trust? It seems that a long fight awaits us. We are ready for it. “
