Large numbers of farmers are leaving the sites, as many protesters, who have been camping in protest for more than 15 days, return home to work in the fields. Hundreds of activists had marched to the Delhi border on Wednesday. Many others left Mansa on Thursday, Bathinda, Barnala and districts of Sangrur.
Arhityas (commission agents), packed into two buses, headed to Delhi on Thursday from Sangrur. Large numbers of jathas will depart for Delhi from Amritsar on Friday after paying tribute at the Golden Temple.
Rattan Singh, Secretary General of the Sangharsh Border Area Committee and in charge of Attari, Majitha, and Jandiala assembly constituencies, said a group of nearly 100 farmers returned from Delhi on Thursday. “We all have commitments to fulfill but at the same time we must keep the fight alive. That is why we have decided to rotate the functions ”, he said.
When asked about the cost of sending a group of protesters to Delhi, he said that Rs 15,000-Rs 18,000 worth of diesel is consumed on a round trip to Delhi in a tractor-car. A bus ride donated by people costs between 19,000 and 21,000 rupees. However, a rented bus costs between Rs 45,000 and Rs 50,000 round trip in a week, plus Rs 500 per day for the driver.
“We are happy that people from all walks of life are voluntarily donating for the agitation of farmers,” he said. Although farmers are concerned about the long-term fight, they are optimistic about the outcome.
