The government and farmers ‘unions will meet at 2 pm Thursday, when protests against the three farm laws enter the 35th. On Monday, the government had proposed holding the sixth round of talks on Wednesday, and farmers’ unions they accepted the proposal the day after. Initially, responding to the Center’s offer to hold the sixth round of talks at a date and time convenient for farmers, the unions had proposed on Saturday to hold the dialogue at 11 a.m. on December 29. All five previous rounds of talks, including one on December 1, 3 and 5, have failed to resolve the deadlock. While the Center has refused to repeal the laws and instead suggested amendments, the farmers are adamant on a total reversal.
On Tuesday, the 34th day of the protests, the Patna police had to charge lathi against a group of protesters who were trying to march towards the residence of the governor of Bihar to express their support for farmers protesting at various borders in Delhi. Also on that day, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), whose government is in power in Delhi, announced that it would provide free Wi-Fi to protesting farmers. The AAP has on several occasions expressed its support for the farmers, and the party’s convenor and Delhi’s chief minister visited the Singhu border, the epicenter of the protests, twice. Last month, Kejriwal had rejected the Delhi police request to convert the city’s stadiums into temporary prisons, as police tried to prevent protesters from entering the national capital.
