With protesting farmers attached to their demand to repeal the Center’s new agricultural laws, thousands of people remained at the border points of the national capital on Friday amid heavy police deployment.
Representative groups of farmer agitators will meet later in the day to discuss the future course of action after talks between them and three union ministers yielded no resolution on Thursday.
Uttar Pradesh farmers protesting blocked National Highway 9 near the UP gate, while those from Punjab and Haryana stayed at other border points leading to Delhi.
Another round of discussions between farmers’ unions and the Center is scheduled for Saturday.
Security personnel at the border points – Singhu, Tikri, Chilla and Ghazipur – stand guard, as the ongoing protests entered their ninth day on Friday.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police have suggested alternative routes for travelers entering or leaving the city.
The Delhi Transit Police used Twitter to inform travelers about the closure of the Singhu, Lampur, Auchandi, Safiabad, Piao Maniyari and Saboli borders. They also said that National Highway 44 was closed on both sides.
They instructed travelers to take alternate routes via National Highway 8, Bhopra, the Apsara border, and the Peripheral Highway.
“Traffic has been diverted from Mukarba and GTK roads. Avoid Outer Ring Rd, GTK road, NH 44,” Delhi traffic police tweeted.
According to the police, the Tikri and Jharoda borders are closed for any traffic movement, while the Badusarai border is open only for light motor vehicles such as cars and two-wheelers. The Jhatikara border is open only to two-wheelers, he said.
However, if someone needs to travel to Harayana, they can travel via Dhansa, Daurala, Kapashera, Rajokri National Highway-8, Bijwasan / Bajghera, Palam Vihar and Dundahera Borders, police said.
“The Chilla border on the Noida link road is closed to traffic from Noida to Delhi due to protests by farmers near Gautam Budh Dwar. People are advised to avoid the Noida link road to get to Delhi and use DND, “they said in a tweet.
Since the Ghazipur border on National Highway 24 is closed to traffic due to protests, the police advised travelers coming from Ghaziabad to Delhi to use the Apsara or Bhopra borders or the Delhi-Noida Direct (DND) highway .
Protesters had threatened Wednesday to block other roads in Delhi in the coming days if new farm laws were not removed soon. PTI
