Farmers break police barricades on the border between Rajasthan and Haryana and march towards Delhi

A group of farmers broke through barricades set up by Rewari police on Thursday on the Rajasthan-Haryana border and they head towards Delhi. The Haryana police tried to arrest them using water cannons and tear gas.

According to the police, “around 20 to 25 tractors” managed to get through the barricades at around 2:30 pm.
“Around 20 to 25 tractors managed to break through the barricades this afternoon and enter Rewari. They are heading towards Delhi. We will make another attempt to stop them at the Bhudla flyover, ”said Rajesh Kumar, DSP (Bawal). The Bhudla flyover is about 15 km from the protest site where farmers were previously demonstrating.

“We did not resort to any lathicharge to prevent them from penetrating, but we had to use water cannons and tear gas projectiles. However, this did not stop them, ”he said.

As some protesters headed towards Delhi, most of them remained seated on the border, seeking to continue their protest peacefully until their demands were met.

Farmers in Rajasthan and Haryana have been protesting the three farm laws on the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway for almost three weeks. The numbers have risen from just 200 to around 1,500 now after farmers from Gujarat and Maharashtra joined them.

The development It comes a day after the talks with the Center progressed for the first time since farmers who opposed the new farm laws showed up on the doorstep of Delhi more than a month ago.

Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar said there had been a “mutual consensus” on two of the four lawsuits raised by the farmers’ unions. The two parties agreed to meet again on January 4.

The Center agreed to “decriminalize” stubble burning by excluding farmers from the scope of the ‘Commission for the Management of Air Quality in the National Capital Region and the 2020 Contiguous Areas Ordinance’, and eliminate the provisions of the project of the Electricity Amendment Act, 2020, which are intended to change the existing mode of payment of subsidies to consumers.

There was no progress in the demands to repeal the three recently enacted farm laws and provide legal guarantee on the MSP or minimum support price. These will be discussed when the two parties meet again next week.
