Family alleges rats bit the body of man who died of Covid at Indore hospital

An investigation into the allegations has been ordered.

Indore:

After two gruesome discoveries, of a decomposed corpse and the apparently abandoned body of a baby, in the morgue of a state hospital in Indore, another surprise has emerged in the city.

On Monday, the family of an 87-year-old man who died at Indore’s Unique Hospital after being infected with the Covid virus received his remains in a white body bag. Hours later, while receiving the body, the family was horrified to find parts of the man’s face and legs apparently bitten.

The family has claimed that the rats were allowed to attack the body while it was in storage.

“See how the rats have bitten the body in just four hours. This is an injustice … they should have told us, only then have we taken the body,” said Preeti Jain, the man’s daughter-in-law.

“We were surprised to see the body when the rats nibbled on the body’s eyes, face, ear and legs. Hospital staff denied taking responsibility for the same,” said Prakash Jain, her son.

In the images of the incident, the anguished family can be seen gathered outside the hospital, which is on a busy main street, with the man’s body, still inside a white body bag, on a stretcher. The images also show disturbing blood stains on the body bag.

The family has alleged that rats attacked the body.

In other images, the men who appear to be hospital personnel (dressed in full-length suits) appear to be yelling at the family; In one video, a staff member points an angry finger.

The family can also be seen arguing with local police asking them to disperse to ensure crowds do not gather during the pandemic.

The dead man, identified as Navin Chand Jain, was admitted Friday. It was Covid positive.

The administration has launched a masterful investigation.

“We have asked the hospital administration. In addition, according to the orders of the Collector, an ADM level committee has been formed and they have started the investigation,” said Amit Malakar, a node officer.
