Fact check, don’t leak letters in the media: Andhra top cop to Chandrababu Naidu

Andhra Pradesh Police Director General Gautam Sawang sparked controversy on Tuesday by writing a letter to Telugu Party Chairman Desam and former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, asking him to refrain from writing open letters without fact-checking.

Sawang was reacting to a letter the TDP chief wrote in connection with the attack on S Ramachandra, brother of Judge S Ramakrishna in the town of B Kothakota in the Chittoor district on Sunday night. Naidu had alleged that the attack was planned and sponsored by the ruling YSR Congress Party to quell the dissenting voice of Ramakrishna.

The DGP said that investigations had shown that the allegations made by Naidu against YSRCP were far from the truth.

“It is regrettable that such accusations are made without verifying the facts and then generalize and attribute them to the ‘deterioration of the situation of law and order’ in the state,” he said.

“I ask that you kindly refrain from posting letters addressed to me in the media, as the content may contain incorrect and unverified information, which may unnecessarily arouse suspicion in the minds of the general public and defame the innocent, “Sawang said.

He said that if the head of the TDP had any reason or reason to suspect the involvement of any individual, he could write to the police department on a sealed cover and help the police fulfill their legal duties to maintain and enforce the status of law.

Regarding the Chittoor incident, the DGP said that Ramachandra suffered minor injuries to the nose during a confrontation with Prathap Reddy over a minor matter. “The investigations revealed that Prathap Reddy is a staunch supporter of the TDP. So the accusation made by Naidu that it was an attack sponsored by YSRCP leaders is false, ”he said.

The official TDP spokesperson, Kommareddy Pattabhiram, criticized the DGP for responding to Naidu by making counter-accusations against the latter, rather than taking action against the defendants in the Chittoor incident.

He said that Naidu had written to the DGP only to tell it that this attack was carried out only one day after the judge addressed a Dalita Mahasabha in Vijayawada, raising questions about the attackers’ political intentions.

“Therefore, it is the responsibility of the DGP to verify the charges made by the head of the TDP, instead it chose to respond to him by giving a clean note to the YSRCP and asking Naidu not to write such letters,” Pattabhiram said.

The TDP leader appealed to the DGP not to jeopardize the self-respect of the police force before the YSRCP, headed by Prime Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.
