Indian markets were unable to sustain their slight recovery in midday trading and fell half a percent, before the October series derivatives contracts expired.
The S&P BSE Sensex was trading around 39,700 levels, down 220 points. The index hit an intraday low of 39,524. Meanwhile, the broader Nifty50 index hovered around the 11,650 mark. Kotak Mahindra Bank and Asian Paints (both up 2%) were Sensex’s top winners, followed by ICICI Bank and Reliance Industries (both up 1%). On the other hand, Larsen & Toubro fell 4 percent after announcing its September quarter results.
The Nifty sector indices were mixed, with the Nifty PSU Bank index, down 1 percent, leading the list of losers.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices were down 0.30% and 0.7%, respectively.
