NEW DELHI: On Wednesday, the government further extended the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITR) for the 2019-20 financial year (2020-21 assessment year) for individual taxpayers by 10 days until January 10 2021 in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a tweet, the IT department said: “In view of the continuing challenges taxpayers face in meeting legal compliance due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the government further extends the dates for various compliance.”

In addition, the deadline for the submission of ITRs for the 2019-20 fiscal year by companies has also been extended by 15 days until February 15 as of January 31.
The due date for submission income tax return (ITR) by individuals and companies was on December 31, 2020 and January 31, 2021, respectively.
This is the third time that the IT department has extended the deadline for filing returns. In May, the Center extended the deadline from July 31 to November 30, which was extended until December 31 later.
Additionally, the due date for filing under the Vivad Se Vishwas direct tax dispute resolution scheme has been extended by one month to January 31. Meanwhile, the date to file the annual GST return for the 2019-20 fiscal year has been extended by 2 months until February 28. , 2021.
Separately, the tax department had reported that more than 4.54 crore of ITR was filed through December 28 for the current fiscal year. In the comparable period last year, income tax returns of 4.77 crore were filed.
