Costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, the first Indian to win an Oscar, passed away in Mumbai on Thursday morning. She was 91 years old.

Remembering the Academy Award-winning costume designer, veteran actor Randhir Kapoor spoke exclusively to ETimes and said, “He’s worked on a lot of RK poster movies. It was a very fine technique that he designed very authentic clothes for the guy. of movies that are set in a particular period. Whether they were old-time movies or a modern movie, their dresses were true to the time, very good and unique. ”

He further added: “She thoroughly understood the director’s requirement. She was very professional in her approach. It was one of a kind and one of a kind may her soul rest in peace.”

Bhanu Athaiya made history by winning the Oscar for Best Costume Design for Lord Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ in 1983.

In an exclusive interaction with ETimes, her daughter Radhika confirmed that she passed away in her sleep this morning. He added that he had a mild fever and cough and was taking antibiotics. It was some kind of pneumonia.
