Was it difficult to get good movies and roles as a newcomer to Bollywood?
As a newcomer, it wasn’t about good or bad movies, it was about making movies. I needed to be seen and made my presence felt. When I came, I was part of many multiple leads. He wanted to be recognized as an actor. After that, you get your place where you sign movies and prove yourself. It’s a journey and it’s not like you plan something and it happens. The best things in my life have happened when I hadn’t planned them.
Would it have been different if you debuted today?
No I dont think so. I have had a fabulous and very unconventional trip. Now I have gotten better roles and better movies. My other friends and colleagues have gotten married or settled. I think now I’m getting my best work and I’m proud of it. I don’t want it any other way.
It has been in the industry for more than two decades. Has the issue of insiders and outsiders ever bothered you?
There is no outsider-insider in Bollywood. There is groupism, but it is everywhere in all workplaces. When you’re good at your job, people don’t see if you’re an insider or an outsider. Once you prove yourself, you will have a safe journey. Your debut is much more publicized when you are from the industry. As an outsider, it takes a little longer to achieve success. But I think it’s fun for you to fall down, get up, and make your own way.
How is your relationship with your Bollywood counterparts?
My friends and colleagues have always been very fond of me because we have mutual respect for each other’s work. I think what you are worth is how competent you are and they see it that way.
Any advice you would give to someone who aspires to become an actor?
Bollywood is an amazing place to be and you just have to be passionate about what you are doing. If something doesn’t happen, it doesn’t mean it’s the end of life. You should have a great support system around you. You really have to work hard here. It is an ongoing process to achieve success and then maintain it as well. It’s hard work, but when you get there, there’s nothing like it.
