One of the two female Indian Navy officers, who have been selected to join as ‘Observers’ (Airborne Tactics) in the helicopter stream, has said that they are delighted with the new profile.
“It feels great to be a part of the history of the Indian Navy today,” said 2nd Lt. Kumudini Tyagi.
“Being combat-ready navy platforms, through helicopters, we will be able to perform combat functions, including on-board weapons and sensor control. This profile is exciting and exciting at the same time, ”he added.
This will be the first time women have been sent to front-line warships.
Aside from 2nd Lt. Tyagi, the other officer is 2nd Lt. Riti Singh.
Previously, the entry of women was restricted to fixed-wing aircraft taking off and landing on the ground.
The two are part of a group of 17 Navy officers, including four female officers and three officers from the Indian Coast Guard, who received ‘Wings’ upon graduation as ‘Observers’ in a ceremony held today at INS Garuda, in Kochi of Kerala, a government statement said.
The ceremony was presided over by Rear Admiral Antony George, Chief of Staff (Training), who presented the awards and coveted wings to the graduating officers.
Officers in the 91st ordinary course and the 22nd SSC observer course received training in air navigation, flight procedures, tactics used in air warfare, antisubmarine warfare, and operation of onboard avionics systems.
These officers would serve aboard the Indian Navy and Coast Guard maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft, according to the statement.
