LInux Lite, one of the best lightweight and alternative Windows distributions, has released a trial version of its upcoming v5.0. The first release candidate (rc1) for Linux Lite 5.0 is the most comprehensive and feature-packed release of Linux Lite so far. So, let’s take a look at the list of new changes that will finally ship with the final v5.0 version.
Linux Lite 5.0: New Features
System boot configuration
Inheriting the permanent feature of Linux Lite 4.8 above, v5.0 turns UEFI and SecureBoot considerations into reality. You can now boot Linux Lite in secure UEFI boot mode.
During startup, Lite 5.0 verifies the integrity of the file system, which is now part of the Linux Lite stream from Ubuntu. In the midst of that, you can press CTRL + C to cancel it.
As soon as you get to the start menu, you will notice a new entry in the start menu list. Yes, you can also start Linux Lite in OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) mode.
If you don’t know, an OEM installer is an option especially for a computer systems manufacturer. In this mode, the operating system creates a temporary user and then allows end users to create a real account and configure the system according to their own preferences.
After choosing an option, the installer has a new change in the Updates and other software section. You can check it to install its hardware drivers during installation, for example for your NVIDIA video card.
Themes and new designs
Moving on to visual appearance, the lightweight Linux Lite 5.0 also makes the multi-component user interface more polished and cleaner. When installation completes, Lite welcomes you with the redesigned Lite welcome program that is built with updated GTK3.
The logout screen also gets a new furnished layout with more details and new options.
Many options on the logout screen may not be for your daily use. Therefore, you can also customize the screen with the desired option displayed on the logout screen.
Linux Lite has a default Xfce desktop environment that makes it lighter. Therefore, to enhance the user experience, you now have the Xfce screen saver. Although it is disabled by default, you can enable it later and add your favorite theme.
Software Lite
Upon reaching the software package, Lite 5.0 launches Pinta, a cross-platform bitmap image drawing and editing program. Instead of Pinta, you can search for GIMP.
New Zim note-taking app enters v5.0, replacing previously unsupported CherryTree. Chrome also comes with Chromium as a Snap package. Finally, you can access Paint directly from the Accessories.
Other improvements
Before logging into Linux Lite, you can now also choose the language you are most comfortable with.
You might not like it, but a new update notifier is now enabled by default to ping you twice a day about new software updates. Of course, you can also disable it from Menu Settings> Session and Startup> Application Auto Launch tab and then uncheck Package Update Indicator.

How to download and install Linux Lite 5.0?
Now, after reading so many new features, you should want to download and try them right now. But before installing it, check the minimum system requirements for Lite (which is very low):
- 1 GHz processor
- 768 MB of RAM
- 8GB HDD / SD
Currently, the trial version of Linux Lite 5.0 is now available. Therefore, you can download the ISO image from the official link here. Also, it is recommended not to use v5.0-rc1 for productions.
Now burn the ISO image to a 2GB or larger USB flash drive or writable DVD. You can use third party software like Etcher. Alternatively, you can use the dd command:
sudo dd if=linux-lite-5.0-rc1-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M
where “x” is the letter of your USB memory.
Note: Rufus, Yumi, Multiboot and other multi-boot applications are not supported.
Finally, boot the system with a USB stick and install Linux Lite 5.0 to enjoy the best lightweight Linux distribution.
