In 2009 Pietersen, now retired, became one of the highest-paid IPL players when he was bought by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping Rs 9.8 crore. But with the money came the team’s jealousy, according to Vaughan.
“I think there was a lot of jealousy. And the players will deny it entirely now, but I think it was at the time that Kevin had a massive contract,” Vaughan told Fox Sports.
Pietersen also had major consequences with then-captain Andrew Strauss due to their differences regarding the reluctance of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to allow participation in the IPL.
“It was nothing else that Kev at the time wanted to go to the IPL. This is how it all started to explode and that was when those factions came into play,” he said.
According to Vaughan, Pietersen believed that playing in the IPL with other important international players would help in the development of the ODI team.
“I was telling the team that I wanted to play because it would promote the development of the one-day team and all the one-day players would have the opportunity to play there and improve their game,” he added.
However, several team members felt that Pietersen was only looking for the money.
“They felt he just wanted to go for the money. He had a great contract, while many of the other players didn’t even smell them,” he said.
“It was a lot Kevin against the team in terms of that.”
