SRINAGAR: Four terrorists, including a former police officer, were killed Friday in an encounter with security forces, while another surrendered, in Shopian District of Jammu and cashmereofficials said.
The former Jammu and Kashmir police officer, identified as Shakoor Parray, was the district commander of the Al-Badr group.
Another terrorist involved in the kidnapping and murder of a panch from the Khanmoh area of the city whose body was recovered from Shopian on Friday was among the terrorists killed.
Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the Kiloora area of the Shopian district in southern Kashmir, after receiving specific information about the presence of terrorists, a police spokesman said.
During the search operation, when the presence of terrorists was found, they were given the opportunity to surrender, however, they opened indiscriminate fire on the joint search group, which was taken in retaliation, leading to an encounter, he said.
The spokesperson said that in the ensuing encounter, four terrorists were killed and their bodies recovered from the meeting site.
Srinagar-based Defense spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said a terrorist also surrendered during the encounter.
“A terrorist (has) surrendered. Two AKs and three pistols recovered (from the meeting place),” he said.
However, the police spokesperson said that during the encounter, the police and security forces, while displaying extreme professionalism, also arrested an active terrorist, identified as Shoiab Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Awantipora.
The dead terrorists have been identified as Suhail Bhat, Zubair Nengroo and Shakir-ul-Jabbar.
According to police records, Parray became engaged as a Special Police Officer (SPO) in 2014 in the Kulgam District Police. Meanwhile, for operational reasons, he was converted as a police officer in the police department and adapted in the Awantipora police district, the police spokesman said.
He said that Parray was later transferred from Awantipora district to Anantnag district, where he took four rifles from the other officials and joined the terrorist team.
After joining the terror group, Parray became active in the area and distributed the seized weapons among his close associates, the spokesman said, adding that he was the main responsible for the outlaw group Al-Badr and was involved in recruiting young people in terrorist ranks.
All of the killed terrorists had a long history of terrorist crimes and were involved in the planning and execution of various terrorist attacks in the area, including attacks on police and security establishments, the police spokesman said.
Parray and Suhail Bhat were also involved in the recent kidnapping and murder of a panch from the Khanmoh area of the city, he said, adding that they were also involved in the kidnapping of a Territorial Army soldier Shakir Manzoor Wagay, a Shopian resident who has supposedly been assassinated.
On Friday, police recovered the body of the panch, who was reported missing 10 days ago in the Khonmoh area of the city, in the Shopian district of southern Kashmir.
Local residents of Dangam village in Shopian informed police that a body appears to have been buried inside a village vegetable garden, police said.
The deceased was later identified as Nisar Ahmad Bhat, 45, a BJP-affiliated panch, who was reported missing since August 19 by his family in Panthachowk in the city.
The police spokesman said that taking into account the prevailing pandemic due to COVID-19 and to ensure people’s safety from the inherent risk of contracting the infection, the bodies of the terrorists will be sent to Handwara for burial purposes after complete all formalities.
The closest relatives of the dead terrorists will be able to participate in the last rites in Handwara, he said.
The incriminating material, including weapons and ammunition, was recovered from the meeting place and has been taken to the records of the case for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other terrorist crimes, the spokesperson added.
