A female elephant that fell into a deep well in a farm field in Tamil Nadu’s Panchapalli Village Dharmapuri district was finally rescued on Friday after a 16-hour rescue operation by the fire department.
The well is known to be 50 feet deep and belongs to a farmer named Venkatachalam.
According to the Dharmapuri Fire Department, Venkatachalam had heard the trumpet of an elephant and had searched for it. He had looked down the well while looking for the elephant and immediately called the department for help.
A team of forestry officials rushed to the scene yesterday and successfully rescued the elephant with two cranes.
A team of veterinarians and activists were also present at the scene.
A video that went viral on social media shows the huge animal looking perfectly calm as it is pulled out of the well.

The video has gone viral on social media, earning applause for the rescue team.
Indian Forest Service officer Parveen Kaswan was among those who praised the rescue. “After hours of operation, which also included food supply, the elephant is rescued by a forestry team. It was a 50-foot deep well. And he also gives the elephant credit for his will,” he wrote on Twitter.
