Election ‘Commission’: Rahul, slam Congress voting panel Assam Election News

NEW DELHI: On Saturday, Congress lashed out at the Election Commission after it lowered Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s campaign ban from 48 hours to 24 hours after the latter’s apology.
Rahul Gandhi posted a sharp two-word tweet: Election Commission.

On Friday, the Election Commission had banned Sarma from campaigning in all ways for 48 hours for allegedly making threatening comments against the head of the Bodoland Popular Front (BPF), Hagrama Mohilary.
A day later, he reduced the ban to 24 hours after the minister offered an “unconditional apology” and assured the voting panel that he would comply with the provisions of the model code.
In response to the EC’s move, Surjewala called it a “dark day” for democracy.
“A dark day for parliamentary democracy. The ECI does not even have the guts to uphold its own order. It is regrettable that the EC gives in under pressure from the Modi government and reversed its own order banning Sh. Himanta Biswa Sarma. The history will not forgive the ECI or BJP for this sin, “said Surjewala on Twitter.
Congress has disagreed with the voting panel in Assam after a dispute broke out over a voting team in Assam carrying an EVM in the vehicle belonging to the wife of a BJP candidate.
The incident turned into a major controversy on Friday with Congress and AIUDF claiming that the EVM was being “stolen.” This prompted the Electoral Commission to suspend four election officials and order a replay in the booth when a video of the fiasco went viral on social media.
Meanwhile, on Saturday Congress held a protest against the incident and alleged that the ruling party in the state is indulging in electoral rigging.
