Effects of Diwali, Durga Puja and Elections on Covid-19 Outbreak May Be Visible Soon, Government Says


The Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday that the Center is taking urgent measures to control the Covid-19 outbreak in Delhi by taking a number of measures such as increasing beds in general, including ICU beds, double tests to 1-1.2 lakhs per day, enforce contact quarantine, containment zone POE, and more.

Moving quickly, the health ministry has announced that the workforce will be increased in the national capital to inspect nearly 4,000 containment areas in Delhi following government-induced standard operating procedures.

Dr VK Paul from Niti Aayog said that the ICU bed limit will increase from 3,500 ICU beds to 6,000 ICU beds in the coming days.

Noting increased social interaction amid the disease outbreak, officials also added that the effects of the elections, Durga Puja, Diwali can be seen in the coming weeks. “We have to continue to watch new cases very carefully,” officials said at the news conference.

Health Ministry officials said the October trend was marked with a record Covid-19 count, and while Delhi has reported fewer cases in the past 48 hours, a conclusion cannot yet be drawn. “Average daily test trajectory increased after June in Delhi. The number of Covid-19 cases decreased in mid-August. Since October, the number of cases is at a record level. Fewer cases have been detected in the last 48 hours, but now we cannot come to a conclusion, ”said Union Health Ministry Secretary Rajesh Bhushan.

India recorded 29,163 new Covid-19 infections on Tuesday, bringing the cumulative count to 88.74,290. The death toll rose to 1,30,519 after 449 new victims were registered in the last 24 hours. The number of new coronavirus infections in India reported in one day fell below 30,000 after four months. The last time India reported fewer than 30,000 Covid-19 cases was on July 15.

As of Tuesday, India has recorded more daily Covid-19 recoveries than daily new cases for six consecutive weeks, according to government data.

“India has continued the uninterrupted trend of new daily rallies surpassing daily new additions by the 44th day. A total of 43,851 Covid-19 patients recovered Monday from just 30,548 newly detected cases. This translates into a net reduction of 13,303 in the number of active cases that now stands at 465,478, ”said the statement from the Ministry of Health.
