The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has subpoenaed Raninder Singh, son of Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, in connection with the alleged violation of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) on 27 October.

Raninder had previously appeared before the ED on July 21, 2016. He was then asked to explain the alleged movement of funds to Switzerland and the creation of the Jacaranda Trust and some subsidiaries in the British Virgin Islands.

The ED subpoena came at a time when its officials had sought to inspect TI’s files in three cases against it and the CM through a request on September 14, 2020. Although the inspection was initially allowed, it was later stopped after Raninder filed a revised petition saying the ED had no locus standi as he had not served any notice.

Raninder’s attorney, Jaiveer Shergill, said: “We will review the subpoena and, accordingly, we will present our case.”

Questioning the timing of the call, Congressional leaders said: “These could have come now probably because of the tough position Captain Amarinder has taken against the Center over the farm laws.”
