A massive dust storm swept parts of Delhi-NCR on Sunday morning, severely affecting visibility in places.

Strong winds accompanied by light rains and hail in some areas brought a respite to the national capital which has seen mercury levels close to 40 degrees in recent days.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the change in climate was caused by a western disturbance, a non-monsoonal precipitation pattern driven by westerly winds, which brought light rain, thunderstorms and low temperatures in the city.

Kuldeep Srivastava, head of IMD’s regional forecasting center in Delhi, said: “We had forecast this three or four days ago. It was recorded yesterday in Himachal Pradesh, and from there has affected parts of Uttarakhand, northern Punjab and Haryana, and the NCR region. Now it will move towards Uttar Pradesh. “

Palam, in the south-west of Delhi, recorded a wind speed of 60 kmp / h on Sunday morning. While the IMD would release exact figures later in the evening, Srivastava said temperatures in Delhi would have dropped by four to five degrees Celsius and hail has likely been reported in parts of the NCR.

Squally winds were recorded from the northwest direction with a speed of around 74 kmp / h near 11.40 am at Delhi-NCR. The temperature in the region dropped from 35 degrees to 28 degrees Celsius, according to the IMD.

On Saturday, the national capital, Delhi, registered the maximum temperature of 40.9 degrees Celsius, the meteorological agency said.
